Lauren V. Smigelski
Co-Owner
Lauren joined MJM Services in 2017, bringing a strong foundation in public policy from her work with a nonprofit in Washington, D.C., after earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Wittenberg University. She thrives on the dynamic nature of association management, enjoying the challenge of creating success regardless of the circumstances.
Outside of work, Lauren is actively involved in her community, volunteering at her church, serving on the board of LakewoodAlive, and co-chairing the biannual Lakewood Historical Society House Tour. She also enjoys going to the theater, quilting, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
Eleanor M. Spuhler
Co-Owner
Eleanor became a part of the MJM Services team in 2001, following a successful career in the hospitality industry. A chef by education, she held various positions at notable Cleveland-area restaurants, including Pier W and the Downtown Cleveland Ferris Steakhouse. Eleanor’s favorite aspect of association management is collaborating with dedicated volunteers and hearing the inspiring stories of members, many of whom become friends. The variety of tasks in her schedule ensures no two days are the same, a close second in her enjoyment.
Outside of work, Eleanor recharges by cooking, taking regular trips to the beach near her home in Yulee, FL, and practicing yoga. She also dedicates her time to fostering kittens too young for shelter environments for local animal services.
M. Joan McCarthy
Consultant & Account Executive
As the founder of MJM Services, Joan is a lifelong Clevelander who deeply values developing long-term relationships. Her extensive experience in association management has provided her with the rewarding opportunity to build lasting friendships with industry peers nationwide, and she greatly appreciates working alongside quality board members who embody a strong volunteer ethic. Joan’s professional journey began with a solid business education, including an accounting major and insurance minor from CSU, further solidified by earning the prestigious Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation. With 30 years spent in the insurance sector, she brings a seasoned and knowledgeable perspective to her work at MJM Services.
Beyond her professional life, Joan is passionate about family, travel (having explored 6 continents, all 50 states, and 32 countries!), discovering new restaurants, reading, playing bridge, and genealogy.
Susan E. Austin-Carney
Account Executive
Susan Austin-Carney brings a unique blend of legal expertise, publishing insight, and a passion for human connection to her work in association management. A proud “Tar Heel” with an English degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Susan further honed her analytical skills at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where she chaired the Moot Court Program. Her foundational experience includes serving on the personal staff of a United States Senator in Washington, D.C., followed by a dive into legal publishing where she developed a deep appreciation for legislative history. Joining MJM Services in 2006, Susan truly values the privilege of collaborating hand-in-hand with the leadership and members of diverse professional organizations. She is deeply grateful for the strong relationships built over the years, embracing each organization’s mission as her own with a firm belief in “no shortcuts” to achieving their goals.
Outside of the professional sphere, Susan is endlessly fascinated by the intricacies of human motivation and decision-making. She also enjoys exploring the world of wine, from learning to tasting, and cherishes the incredible journey of parenting her two sons, who she credits with teaching her more than she ever thought possible.
Devon N. Baker
Account Executive
Devon joined MJM Services in 2025. After graduating from Kent State University with a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality & Event Planning Management, she has had a wide range of experience across hotels, restaurants, catering, event planning, and the spa and wellness industry. Devon enjoys working in association management for the rewarding process of bringing events to life—from behind-the-scenes planning to creating experiences members truly enjoy.
Outside of work, she stays active with local Cleveland community events, hiking, walks at Edgewater Beach, traveling (with hopes to go international soon), and spending time with her big Italian family, especially as an aunt to six wonderful nieces and nephews.
Sarah G. Butterfield
Account Executive
Sarah brings over two decades of valuable experience to association management, joining MJM Services in 2015. Throughout her career, she has consistently demonstrated leadership and achieved significant results, including managing membership growth at the Great Lakes Science Center, coordinating solicitation and stewardship activities at Case Western Reserve University, and facilitating Resource Center visits at Planned Parenthood of Greater Cleveland. At MJM Services, Sarah enjoys seeing a client’s vision brought to life. Sarah holds an MBA with a concentration in Non-Profit Management from Case Western Reserve University and a BA in Sociology with a minor in Women’s Studies from Bowling Green State University.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Sarah cherishes spending time with her family and friends, enthusiastically attends her kids’ sporting events, and appreciates a really good cup of coffee.
Sandy L. Habecker
Account Executive
Sandy joined MJM Services in 2023, bringing over 20 years of experience as a Tradeshows and Events manager for a local home medical equipment manufacturer, where she gained extensive experience in planning and executing corporate events nationwide. Day to day, Sandy truly enjoys the opportunity to connect with a dynamic network of professionals. With over 30 board members and a dozen active committees, there’s always something meaningful and engaging happening.
Outside of work, Sandy enjoys boating on Lake Erie, golfing, snow skiing, walking her Goldendoodle, Izzy, and spending quality time with family and friends.
Candace R. Kolos
Bookkeeper & Account Executive
Candace rejoined MJM Services in 2022, bringing a diverse background in administrative, conference coordination, patient advocacy, and research roles. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from The Ohio State University and a Master of Science in Sociology with a minor in Arabic from Utah State University. What Candace enjoys most about association management is the dynamic interplay of problem-solving and strategic thinking. She is passionate about analyzing complex situations, developing effective solutions, and implementing strategies to achieve organizational objectives.
Outside of work, Candace enjoys spending time with her family and friends, taking care of her houseplants and yard, live music, reading, cooking, exercising, and new adventures.
Sarah J. Pierce
Account Executive
Sarah Pierce joined the MJM Team in 2024, bringing experience in recruitment, non-profit development, and an extensive second career in real estate. She graduated with a BA in English Literature from Grove City College. Sarah enjoys helping her clients achieve their goals, whether through website tech support, communication, or event planning.
When she is not playing chauffeur to one of her children, Sarah’s hobbies include crafting, cooking, reading, and watching YouTube with her husband of 19 years, Paul.
Janet A. Streeter
Client Services Associate
Jan, a Cleveland native, graduated from Fairview High School in 1965. After working for her father’s company and later as a receptionist at Coldwell Banker in Chicago, she returned to Cleveland and has been a dedicated member of the MJM Services team since 1996. Jan enjoys the daily interactions and diverse connections her work at MJM Services provides. She values meeting people from various organizations and finds fulfillment in her role.
Outside of work, Jan is best friends with her son, Skip, and they actively enjoy the Cleveland area. A passionate cook, she loves hosting gatherings and grilling for family and friends.
